In the mountains just above the town of Ashland, the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train gives visitors a view into anthracite mining both above and below the ground.

Anthracite played a major role in this entire region, and sites like the Pioneer Tunnel help keep the history alive. Tickets for the mine and train can be purchased seperately or as part of a package. The mine carts go into the mountainside on a fairly level track for the first part of the tour, then visitors are guided on foot through a portion of the mine. The steam train ride affords a glimpse of the valley below, but is extremely bumpy.
